An Analysis of Data Link Control Protocols

    Get PDF
In this chapter we analyze the performance of data link protocols. We consider Stop and Wait ARQ and Sliding Window protocol. In Sliding window protocol, we consider Selective Reject ARQ and Go-Back-N ARQ. There are existing results that analyze the link utilization of these protocols in the presence of error. We have experimented in a somewhat more generalized framework. We have also analyzed and experimented with the number of duplicate error-free packets that will be transmitted

Automated Knowledge Discovery from Functional Magnetic Resonance Images using Spatial Coherence

Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) has the potential to unlock many of the mysteries of the brain. Although this imaging modality is popular for brain-mapping activities, clinical applications of this technique are relatively rare. For clinical applications, classification models are more useful than the current practice of reporting loci of neural activation associated with particular disorders. Also, since the methods used to account for anatomical variations between subjects are generally imprecise, the conventional voxel-by-voxel analysis limits the types of discoveries that are possible. This work presents a classification-based framework for knowledge discovery from fMRI data. Instead of voxel-centric knowledge discovery, this framework is segment-centric, where functional segments are clumps of voxels that represent a functional unit in the brain. With simulated activation images, it is shown that this segment-based approach can be more successful for knowledge discovery than conventional voxel-based approaches. The spatial coherence principle refers to the homogeneity of behavior of spatially contiguous voxels. Auto-threshold Contrast Enhancing Iterative Clustering (ACEIC) - a new algorithm based on the spatial coherence principle is presented here for functional segmentation. With benchmark data, it is shown that the ACEIC method can achieve higher segmentation accuracy than Probabilistic Independent Component Analysis - a popular method used for fMRI data analysis. The spatial coherence principle can also be exploited for voxel-centric image-classification problems. Spatially Coherent Voxels (SCV) is a new feature selection method that uses the spatial coherence principle to eliminate features that are unlikely to be useful for classification. For a Substance Use Disorder dataset, it is demonstrated that feature selection with SCV can achieve higher classification accuracies than conventional feature selection methods

A Survey on Piracy Protection Techniques in Digital Cinema Watermarking Schemes

    Get PDF
Watermarking is used in several areas such as CDNs (Content Delivery Networks), as part of the rights management system for counterfeit prevention. Watermarking schemes need some additional features in order to be used in digital cinema. In fact, extra watermarks are added to movies by cinema projectors in projection time, which help identify the cinema hall in which the illegal copy has been recorded. But distortions caused by hand vibrations and the point of view angle make it difficult to recover the watermark. This makes it necessary to be distortion-resistant for the watermarking schemes used in digital cinema. On the other hand, theatre owners would like to locate the camcorder that has recorded the pirate copy. This requires watermarking schemes to be able to estimate the distance and angle using the distributed pirate copy. In this chapter, we present a review on watermarking techniques specifically designed to attack the aforementioned problems

Intelligent Coordinated Control of a Wind Farm and Distributed Smartparks

Energy storage is generally recommended in presence of an intermittent source like wind farm for a better control over the power generation from the wind turbine with the variation of the wind speed. In this paper, the potential of plug-in electric vehicle parking lot (SmartPark) as an energy storage in a power system with a large wind farm has been investigated. Also, a fuzzy logic based coordination controller of the wind farm and the distributed SmartParks has been proposed in this paper. The fuzzy controller uses the total state-of-charge of the SmartParks and the difference between instantaneous demand and the available wind power generation as the inputs and thereby generates the charging or discharging power commands of the SmartParks and the pitch angle reference for the wind turbine. A 12-bus multimachine power system with a 400 MW wind farm is used as a test system. Six SmartParks are also connected to the same bus where the wind farm is connected. The entire model is developed in Real-Time Digital Simulator (RTDS) for power system. The results demonstrate the action of the coordinated controller to reduce the oscillations in the tie-line power flow with the sudden variations of the wind speed

Real-Time Implementation of an Intelligent Algorithm for Electric Ship Power System Reconfiguration

The naval electric ship is often subject to severe damages under battle conditions. The damages or faults might even affect the generators and as a result, critical loads might suffer from power deficiency which may lead to an eventual collapse of rest of the system. In order to serve the critical loads and maintain a proper power balance without excessive generation, the ship power system requires a fast reconfiguration of the remaining system under fault conditions. A fast intelligent algorithm using the Small Population based Particle Swarm Optimization (SPPSO) for dynamic reconfiguration of the available generators and loads when a fault in the ship power system is detected is presented in this paper. SPPSO is a variant of PSO which operates with fewer particles and a regeneration concept, where new potential solutions are generated every few iterations. This concept of regeneration makes the algorithm fast and enhances its exploration capability to a large extent. The strength of the proposed reconfiguration strategy is first illustrated with Matlab results and then with a real-time implementation on a real time digital simulator and a digital signal processor

A DSTATCOM Controller Tuned by Particle Swarm Optimization for an Electric Ship Power System

In an all-electric ship power system, the power quality problems mainly arise due to the pulsed loads, which cause the degradation of the overall system performance. The paper proposes the application of DSTATCOM to improve these power quality problems of an electric ship. DSTATCOM is a shunt compensation device, which regulates the bus voltage by injecting reactive power during the pulsed load operations. The control strategy of DSTATCOM plays an important role to meet the objectives. The paper proposes a controller design strategy which is based on particle swarm optimization (PSO). PSO, an algorithm that falls into swarm intelligence family, is very effective in solving non-linear optimization problems. Here, the optimal parameters of a controller are found using PSO. To evaluate the performance of the proposed controller, a simplified model of a ship power system is developed in MATLAB/SIMULINK environment, which comprises of a 36 MW generator, 10 MW propulsion motor and pulsed loads of different values of real and reactive power. The effectiveness of the DSTATCOM and the PSO based controller are examined on the test system for pulsed loads of 100, 200 and 500 millisecond durations and also for a pulse train of 100 millisecond interval

An Adaptive Control Strategy for DSTATCOM Applications in an Electric Ship Power System

Distribution static compensator (DSTATCOM) is a shunt compensation device that is generally used to solve power quality problems in distribution systems. In an all-electric ship power system, power quality issues arise due to high-energy demand loads such as pulse loads. This paper presents the application of a DSTATCOM to improve the power quality in a ship power system during and after pulse loads. The control strategy of the DSTATCOM plays an important role in maintaining the voltage at the point of common coupling. A novel adaptive control strategy for the DSTATCOM based on artificial immune system (AIS) is presented in this paper. The optimal parameters of the controller are first obtained by using the particle swarm optimization algorithm. This provides a sort of innate immunity (robustness) to common system disturbances. For unknown and random system disturbances, the controller parameters are modified online, thus providing adaptive immunity to the control system. The performance of the DSTATCOM and the AIS-based adaptive control strategy is first investigated in MATLAB-/Simulink-based simulation platform. It is verified through a real-time ship power system implementation on a real-time digital simulator and the control algorithm on a digital signal processor
